(Apcom) - Sarebbero almeno due le vittime della sparatoria avvenuta all'interno della First Congressional Church, chiesa di Neosho, città di circa 10.000 abitanti nella parte sud-orientale del Missouri. Non è ancora chiara la dinamica dell'accaduto, avvenuto alla presenza di circa 17 testimoni. Secondo quanto riportato dall'emittente televisiva Cnn, la sparatoria è avvenuta attorno alle 14 circa ora locale (le 21 ora italiana), durante la funzione in programma dalle 13 alle 15. Le indagini sono in corso, ma per il momento le autorità non hanno ancora rilasciato dichiarazioni sul movente, la dinamica e su eventuali sospetti. Secondo indiscrezioni, la persona o le persone che hanno aperto il fuoco sarebbero volti familiari per i presenti, trasferiti al dipartimento di polizia per essere interrogati.

NEOSHO, Missouri (CNN) -- A gunman burst into a church in southwestern Missouri where his relatives were praying and opened fire on Sunday, killing three people and wounding at least five, authorities said.

"He stormed in during the service and started shooting," said Desiree Bridges, a public information officer for the town of Neosho, about 15 miles south of Joplin.

Two worshippers and an assistant pastor were killed, Police Chief Dave McCracken told CNN. The Associated Press identified the slain pastor as Rev. Kernal Rehobson, 44.

The wounded were transported to area hospitals by ground and air, Bridges said. Video from outside the church showed at least one person carried away on a stretcher.

McCracken said one of the wounded was undergoing surgery and two others are in the hospital. All are expected to recover, he said.

The Newton County 911 Center received a call at 1:54 p.m. (2:54 p.m. ET) saying that someone was shooting in the First Congregational Church, Bridges said.

At the time, a group of Pacific Islanders was holding a service at the church. McCracken said the gunman is also a Pacific Islander and is related to some of the people at the service, including "some of the victims."

The gunman carried three weapons -- including a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol -- and held those in the room hostage, McCracken said.

He asked the children in the room to leave, without their parents, and they did, said McCracken. All are unharmed and accounted for, he said.

When police arrived, the shooter was holding between 25 and 50 people hostage inside the church, Bridges told CNN. After a negotiator spoke with the shooter for five to 10 minutes, police apprehended him, she said.

The suspect, who has not been publicly identified, is in custody at Newton County jail, McCracken said.

In an interview with CNN late Sunday, McCracken said the witness was "not cooperating."

"We do have numerous witnesses, however," he added.

The police chief did not say what the motive is believed to be, but he said authorities are pursuing "a couple of leads."

McCracken told the AP that an incident involving the suspect and a family from the church occurred the day before the shooting.

First Congregational Church is a Latino congregation but opens its doors to other groups.

Some 10,500 people li ve in Neosho, which is about 250 miles west-southwest of St. Louis, Missouri.

"This is a terrible tragedy which was made worse by the fact that it happened in a peaceful place of faith and worship," Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt said in a statement.

BULLETIN: 3 dead, several wounded in downtown church shooting

Three people were killed, and several others were wounded after a person entered a church service at the First Congregational Church of Neosho and opened fire Sunday afternoon.

Dave McCracken, Neosho police chief, said the number of confirmed wounded persons is four to five, but several others who were injured fled the scene during the incident. It has been confirmed that one of the dead is Kernal Rehobson, a leader of this group of worshippers.

The incident happened during an afternoon service catering to Micronesians and held in the Spanish language. The church is located at 121 N. Wood, one block north of the downtown square in Neosho. McCracken said approximately 50 people were in the church when the shooting happened.

"At the time that the rescue attempt was successful we had approximately 20 people in the sanctuary still," he said. "We had some people who escaped the crime scene prior to the police arrival that were wounded, and we had some people escape during the process and at the time of the rescue," McCracken said. "At this point we are unclear as to how many people have been wounded, but as the investigation continues that will be determined."

The suspect, whose identity had not been released by authorities, is in custody in the Newton County Jail. No charges have been filed, and McCracken said those charges may not be filed until Monday morning. McCracken did confirm that the suspect was of "Hispanic or islander" descent. The gunman surrendered to authorities without incident. The gunman surrendered within "five to 10 minutes" after authorities entered the church, according to McCracken.

"After evaluating the scene and gaining additional assistance from the Newton County Sheriff's Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol, entry was made into the sanctuary area where the suspect was confronted," McCracken said. "The suspect surrendered to officers with no resistance. There was threat to the police, as well as the hostages, but no one was injured during the arrest."

Three weapons were recovered from the suspect, who surrendered to authorities after they entered the church. McCracken said the gunman had two small caliber handguns, and one 9 mm semi-automatic pistol with a large magazine.

McCracken said he could not confirm if the gunman was a member of the church.

McCracken said the incident started at 1:54 p.m. on a hot and humid Sunday afternoon. McCracken said those who were in the church at the time of the incident ranged in age from the elderly to children.

He said an incident involving the suspect and a family who attended church at the First Congregational Church on Saturday night fueled the incident Sunday.

"At this point though, we don't have any information more than that," McCracken said. "The incident happened in the county, but I do not have this information at this time."

McCracken said the names, ages and descriptions of the deceased could not be released at the time of the press briefing.

McCracken said he "had seen nothing like this" in his time as police chief of the City of Neosho, a title he has held since 1994.

Chris Gray, an emergency medical technician with Freeman Ambulance District, said he and another EMT treated two of the injured: A male in his early to mid 40s with a gunshot wound to the head and an elderly woman with a gunshot wound to the left arm. Neither of those injuries appeared to be life-threatening, Gray said.

McCracken said more details should be released Monday morning.
